If podcasting were an olympic sport…

Greetings PM family,

I (Jared) casually turned on the Winter Olympics (as one does) this week and it just so happened that Curling was on. My wife said, “what is that?…(she laughed)… why are they sweeping the ice?”.

I found myself in a humorous situation, as I’ve seen the sport of Curling before, but have never attempted to explain what it is or how it’s played. It made me realize that I wasn’t sure I really understood the sport myself. If you aren’t familiar with Curling, this 2 minute video is a fun crash course.

Curling does have some interesting facts about it (and then I promise to bring it back to podcasting):

  • Did you know that it started in the 16th century?
  • It became an official Olympic sport in 1998.
  • The sport includes men’s, women’s and mixed doubles.
  • It has its own set of playing gear, strategy and skill.
  • It has also been featured on shows like the Simpsons, movies such as Men with Brooms, and podcasting newsletters such as this.

Podcasting can be similar to Curling in that not everyone understands or appreciates it, but more people around the world are taking notice. This progression puts podcasters in a unique position, because we become Olympic Athletes to a degree… we are Royal Ambassadors.

The world continues to learn about podcasting, as podcast episodes are produced and new innovations improve the medium overall. Podcast Movement is here to help “Olympic Athlete / Royal Ambassadors” like yourself. This edition of the newsletter we will discuss our involvement with the NAB show this April (as we attempt to spread the good word of podcasting to the broadcast community), as well as share some important reminders that you, the podcast Olympiad and diplomat that you are, will not want to ignore.

Podcasters at NAB

What is NAB? NAB is the National Association of Broadcasters, and their largest conference is held every April in Las Vegas. Needless to say, this event is a big deal for that space, and the NAB has graciously invited Podcast Movement to participate at their event this year.

Podcast Movement will be hosting a mixer for Podcasters at their show on Tuesday, April 10 from 5 to 6 pm in Podcast Pavilion (South Upper Hall).

Podcast Movement will also be hosting a session on Wednesday, April 11. We are proud to feature several key members of our community including Addy Saucedo (The Podcast Planner), Alison Melody (The Food Heals Podcast), Erica Mandy (The Newsworthy), Harry Duran (Podcast Junkies) and Rich Jones (Paychecks and Balances).

We would love to have you join us at NAB in Las Vegas this April.

You can use the promo code EP09 and register for a complimentary access pass to Exhibits Only (and still join us at the mixer). Exhibits Only includes all exhibits and all-badges access sessions. All-Badge Sessions are comprised of the Sessions taking place on Main Stage, On-Floor Programs, the Global UHD conference and Exhibitor-Sponsored Programs.

You also have the option to purchase a $100 Conference Pass Flex if you would like to attend the rest of the sessions that NAB has to offer, including ours on the 11th.

Note: Podcast Movement will also host a community meetup on Tuesday, April 10 in Las Vegas. We will have more information on that soon. You can RSVP and get the location specific update here.

Everything ends in a week!

Ding Ding Ding – Sound the Alarm:

  • Only one week left to submit a speaker proposal for Podcast Movement.
Every year we receive emails from saddened community members who accidentally missed the submission deadline. We hate to reply to those emails with gifs of sad trombones and tiny violins, but that is how it is.

Please submit your presentation here before the deadline at the end of the month!

  • One more week to submit nominees for the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame class of 2018.
We first announced this a few weeks ago and did a short write up about it in this edition of the newsletter.

Submit your nominees this week here.

  • One more week until PM18 registration prices go up!
It would be a shame to wait and pay more when you can get in at the lowest available rate this week!

We don’t want you to miss Podcast Movement 2018 in Philadelphia! Register this week.

Podcast Articles, Happenings and Tips

  • One of the most common questions we get is “How do I improve my rankings within Apple Podcasts?” Dan Misener of Pacific Content has some valuable tips.

In San Diego? We’ll see you this Tuesday at our San Diego Meetup – Team PM will be in San Diego for Social Media Marketing World and are hosting a PM community meetup on Tuesday evening, February 27 from 7pm to 10pm PT. Please make plans to join us if you are in the area!

In closing, we thought it would be appropriate to share a dad joke about curling.

Q: Why should you get your children into curling?
A: It’s the only way to get them to sweep the house.

No? A little humor… very little. Remember… you are an Ambassador!

Podcasting,
Team PM18
